Guernsey

As an island nation Guernsey has a long seafaring history and indeed its location in the English Channel has meant a long history between various English and French Governments over the years. The outcome since the days of Henry V is that the island is a Crown Dependency although is physically closer to France than the UK.

For the past 40 years the island has been involved in the employment of seafarers and whilst initially the offshore employment sector started life to assist the UK shipping industry it can now be said that the majority of crew employed through Guernsey companies are not UK resident seafarers and indeed most clients are not based in the UK either.

Guernsey is the ideal location for this employment activity and being a highly regarded and regulated financial centre the secure payment of seafarers is easily administered from the island.

Talks are ongoing to make improvements to the island coastal and ports infrastructure to encourage large yachts in particular to visit the island on their way to and from the yards in Europe.

The Guernsey operation is at the core of the Voyonic Crew Management Group and is headed up by Neil Carrington who has lived on the island for 20 years.

After a career at sea which began in 1974, serving onboard a variety of oil tankers and offshore support vessels and attaining the rank of Master, Neil came ashore in 1992 to work in the operations team at OIL Limited in Aberdeen.

Following a period as Marine Operations Manager Neil moved into Personnel Management. The team he managed was responsible for a global workforce, operating in Europe, South America, S E Asia and Africa. This is when Neil recognised the full benefits of global employment arrangements and supporting operations from a central hub.

This view was further enhanced when Neil moved to Guernsey to head up an offshore employment company in 2000.
